5. Analysis
While CMB played C in the NCAA, he is one of the best defensive wing prospects in the draft. And he was one last year as a 19 year old freshman as well.
CMB had a 10.1 bpm as a 19 year old freshman wing and improved as a sophomore in several areas:
He increased his usg as he became the main scorer rather than a complementary player while increasing his overall efficiency (TS%).
He increased his ast%, although his ast/tov dropped to a still respectable 0.99.
He maintained his blk% and stl% despite a larger offensive role.
His FT% and 3P% increased, although they still need to continue to increase in the NBA.
He increased his shot creation skills (unassisted rim/mid/dunk%).
He maintained his high rim_rate while shooting an above average rim%.
CMB’s height and size means that he will have to be a Wing PF starter rather than a C starter in the NBA. He compares well to some of his neighbours that are successful starting and rotation PFs.
Mobley as a starting PF next to a traditional C is the reigning defensive player of the year. He didn’t attend the combine, but is C size: taller with a longer wingspan.
CMB as the same age as Mobley and had similar stats in several important areas: rebounding, shooting, playmaking, and shot creation. CMB had key advantages in:
stl% and ast%. CMB disadvantages due to size: blk%, dunksmade/40, rim and dunk finishing%.
The main big advantage for the C size players (Mobley as well as Carter) is the blk%, but if CMB starts as a Wing PF next to a C (like Mobley with Allen), rim protection becomes less necessary than perimeter defence. And this is where CMB shines with by far the highest stl% in this neighbour group.
For CMB to be a Wing starter rather than a bench Wing, he needs to improve his 3P% unless he lucks out next to a unicorn stretch 5 that can block shots. His shooting markers are comparable in several areas such as FT% and 3pa/100.
A smaller Mobley as a star defensive role playing Wing would be an outstanding yet achievable result for CMB. Even if he doesn’t reach that level, a role similar to Washington or a longer Williams is a realistic projection.
CMB is an example of an ideal tweener provided he can shoot 3s well enough. He has the defensive versatility of a wing with a really high stl% and can playmake with a high ast% and positive ast/tov. He can score inside, rebound and provide some rim protection like a C. He has a high 2P% because he has a very high rim rate with above average rim shooting %.
If CMB is drafted in the late lottery or later as projected, he can be a draft steal.
